FAQs
-
You can have as many trainers as you want, as long as each trainer has had a CDL for at least 2 years. And of course, you want someone who is safety conscious, even tempered, etc.
-
For now, there are no minimum hours (Illinois & Missouri). That will likely change in the next couple years as crash data rolls in. But we recommend getting at least 20 hours of behind the wheel time so that you're at least meeting what a typical truck driving school provides. Most of this can be done to and from the job site without an impact on productivity.
-
The administrator is responsible for uploading training data into the TPR and scheduling tests. He or she will only spend about 30 minutes on each trainee from beginning to end. So, it's not much of an added workload, but it is important that the records are complete and accurate.
-
Smaller companies usually just have one. But anyone can do it as long as they can log into the training provider registry. The guidebook we provide has a step by step checklist to follow for each new trainee.
-
Yes, but it's best to have someone else who can check in with the trainers, make sure the assessments are filled out correctly, etc.
-
1. Trainee obtains learners permit.
2. Send trainee for pre-employment DOT drug screen/ clearinghouse query before training begins.
3. Your administrator enrolls the trainee in the online classroom training. This takes the trainee roughly 4-8 hours to complete on any device.
4. Your trainer(s) does the behind-the-wheel training. The length of training depends largely on the skill level of the trainee coming into it and how much you can function stack into your daily workflow.
5. Trainer gives the assessment folder to the administrator
6. Administrator uploads the training data into the registry and schedules the CDL skills test.
7. Trainee passes the CDL exam at DMV and obtains a CDL.

Any company that employs drivers is always at risk. As a general rule, companies are responsible for providing adequate training to their drivers.
Consider the following scenerio. One of your drivers gets into a serious accident. He aquired his CDL from a 2 day program and recieved no additional training. Could the company have done more to make sure the driver was properly trained?
What if the company invested in a certification program for the trainers and a training program that exceedes the state and federal requirements? And at the same time, they took steps to fix any compliance issues they didn't know about?
When on-the-job training is done correctly, it actually helps foster a culture of safety because it's a team effort.
Being able to document that will protect your company.

Absolutely. We’ll send updated guidebooks and videos any time there is a change. And we’re always a phone call away if you ever have a nagging question about training or compliance.
